How to Measure
- Measure the entire length of one wall and enter into Estimator. Measure the longest length of the opposite wall (width) and enter into Estimator. The Estimator will calculate your square footage. If you only have an inches tape measure, divide the total inches by 12. This will give you the measurement in feet. It does no matter which wall you measure first, as long as they intersect perpendicularly.
- If the room has an odd shape with slanted walls, make an imaginary X where the center of the room is, then measure right to left of the house, wall to wall, then front to the back of the house, wall to wall.
- The Estimator adds 5% to your square foot total for cuts and waste (This is standard practice for installing new flooring).
- To calculate linear footage for quarter round and/or baseboard trim, take your square foot measurement and divide by 4.
- If there is a vast open space with two or more adjoining rooms, make an imaginary boundary line between rooms and measure each area independently, length and width. (living room, dining room, family room for example)
- Always measure the hallways independently and out of bedroom hallways (inside of bedroom), separately, length and width.
- If there are cabinets in bathrooms, utility, or kitchens, take the tape measure to the wall(s), over the cabinets, length, and width.
- If you measure for wall tile, measure the vertical wall and horizontal wall, just like length and width. (Vertical feet going up to the height you want and horizontal line right to left to where you want the tile installed).
